Biloxi Yacht Club dedicates 1999 Knost Flying Scot competition to Joyce - Fountain Wiltz
The 62nd annual Knost Regatta held at Pass Christian Yacht Club,
is a sailing event held exclusively for members of the female sex.
Team Captain Monica Cuevas, gathered skippers, Denise Cuevas,
Lucinda Pringle, Sarah Wilkerson, Alternate, Pat Breslin, and
Crew, Lauren Byrd to represent the yacht club in memory of long
time BYC sailor, Joyce Wiltz. Our team faced many challenges, one
of which was practice time. Despite that, our team placed a
modest 7th
out of 14. Not too bad considering the competition we faced. In
fact, our loss became our gain when it came time for the trophy
presentation. John Dane, Commodore of PCYC asked our team to come
to the front and show the back of our shirts (as shown here). At
that, he began his speech with some memories of Joyce, one of
which was her sailing in the 1997 Knost in the Luder Class. His
mention of her being a "pioneer of female sailing on the
coast" is a statement to keep all of us females eager to get
involved in sailing events. Attending the Knost, and dedicating
it to Joyce should remind all of us to the fact that sailing is a
talent that one will never be too old to forget and never to
young to learn.
Thanks to all who volunteered... Denise for the shirt design, Jennifer for the tow there; Vickie O'Neal for practicing; Holly Graham for the suggestions, Troy Cruthirds for the tow back; Mark Ederer and Robbie Schmidt for the encouragement; and everyone who attended. If I missed anyone, know that if I didn't say thanks, then I am now.

Flying Scot Lifts Installed The Flying Scots now have brand new electric lifts installed and are ready for use. To check out a Scot you must be on the Flying Scot Boat Qualified List, which is posted on the Race Committee Bulletin Board. To be qualified to use a boat you must follow the procedure in the BYC Sailing Regulations: One deemed qualified as capable of handling a Club owned yacht under normal weather conditions, primarily with regard to the physical safety of the yacht and personnel aboard. To be classified as boat qualified, one must satisfactorily complete a two-part test; one on the water (which must be demonstrate the ability to master the three major points of sail, upwind, downwind and reaching) and one written. The on-the-water test will be supervised by an Expert , . by the Race Committee Skipper and will include rigging and sailing a designated course, landing and unrigging. A general knowledge test will be administered ; a score of 70 (out of a possible 100) shall be considered passing. If either test is failed the first , time either or both may be retaken a ta later date . Once both portions of the two-part test are satisfactorily completed one will be deemed boat qualified. You then fill out a checkout form and the bartender will assign you a boat to use. The sails are in the New Race Committee sail locker on the pier. When you bring the boat back you MUST place it back in the same slip you removed it from and put all the equipment back in the sail locker. No equipment is to be left in the boats. Please make sure to put the plug in when you lower the boat and take the plug out when you raise it. All the sails should be rolled back up and left DRY in the sail locker. Thanks to Mark Ederer and his crew for installing the Flying Scot lifts and building the sail bins in the Sail Locker. Robbie Schmidt |
