Jerry Ellis Regatta

From the Commodore

We are into the sailing season; the boats are ready now for club members to use. Thanks to Robbie & Jennifer Schmidt and Jeffrey Ellis for the hard work they’ve done the past three months in getting our boats ready for the Chapman Regatta. There were three boats in very bad repair, and Robbie and Jennifer with their helpers saved the Club a major amount of money by using their time and energy to get these boats into racing condition.

We had a team at Chapman Regatta; the regatta consisted of twelve skippers and crew. This team has accomplished something we have not done in many years. BYC won the third race overall, beating Bay Waveland and Pass Christian. This shows that our club is going forward with the sailing program. Thanks to all members who are once again actively participating.

Summer is particularly hard on management because so many members slow down on paying their bills. Please help them out by continuing your prompt payments. Keep in mind the new penalties for being delinquent are 10% plus $25, plus you lose your charge privileges at the club.

Friday night dancing slowed down, so we no longer have the band. In the future, we are considering a special dinner dance for one Saturday night a month.

Thanks to Butch Henley, Lester Lala, Dixie Hollis, Ralph Pringle, Richard Desporte, Gaylord Wilson, and Jude McDonnell for their cooking for our annual Raft Up. The weather was rough, but we still had good participation, serving food poolside and inside. My thanks to the members who did attend. Those that didn’t attend missed a good party.

I attended the Gulf Yachting Association’s first meeting in regards to hosting the Olympic trials in fall of 2007. We have now learned our application went in June 1st to host this event. We will know in October of this year where the host clubs will be. We are in competition with the west coast and New York for this honor. We had three past Olympic sailors at this meeting. They feel we have ideal conditions and facilities to host the trials. If we are approved, the Biloxi Yacht Club will play a part in this event.

We had a Mississippi Gulf Coast Yachting Association meeting the first weekend in June at Bay Waveland Yacht Club. Due to a death in the family, I was unable to attend, but Ralph Pringle was sailing in the first race and was kind enough to leave extra early and take my place at the meeting. Ralph gave me a really good report on this meeting, and I appreciate his help.

I was selected to serve on the Budweiser Sailor of the Year Committee along with Basil Kennedy and Gene Wallet. It is an honor to be on this committee.

A lot of activities are going on at this time, with more planned. Please come down and enjoy your club.

Sincerely Yours,

Jerry J. Ellis,
Commodore
