From the Commodore

Participation in our Wednesday night racing is overwhelming. We are putting the Scots over and taking on as crew everyone who comes down. This is a fun and fellowship thing, so if you just want to go for the ride, show up and we’ll put you on a boat Our Friday night junior sailing is also in full swing, thanks to Donna O’Rourke and her committee.

Robbie Schmidt will give basic sailing instruction on Saturday mornings using the Scots this month. From 10 to 12, you can cruise with Robbie and see if you like sailing. He will also be available to provide certification to those who need it. Certification is required for sailing a Scot on your own.

Join us for the second annual 1/2 New Year’s party to be held on the night of July 30th. This is a crazy costume party and is a lot of fun. Don’t forget the 4th celebration at the club.
The Race for the Case is scheduled for July 10. Before heading to Gulfport, stop by the club that morning and have a light breakfast, served by Jim Graham and his
committee..

Our Summer Series begins on July 11, followed by the weekend of July 17-18. We need plenty of volunteers to man this event, which will take about two hours of your
time. Call the club for an assignment.

Thelma Ellis and her shanghaied crew continue to beautify the grounds. More plants have been put at the west end of the parking lot, and shrubbery has been planted in front of the flagpole. The gang is usually at work every Thursday morning if you would like to help.

I am at my halfway mark this month. I thank everyone for making my term a successful one.

Have a great July

Commodore

House Committee Report

Please, BYC needs your help. Come have lunch at the club Tuesday through Friday from 11:30 till 1:30. During the summer we have a low carb pasta salad for only $4.75 add marinated shrimp or grilled chicken breast for $2.00 more. Also, we serve lots of great salads, burgers and at least one hot special daily.

Cleaning of the carpet in the lounge was recently completed. It looks a lot better. Also new a/c registers were installed in the dinning room ceiling. The rear lounge entrance to the club looks good with the new tile, and a fresh coat of paint.

Much work needs to be done to our facility. A screen is now being built at the rear of the building and on the roof over the kitchen to hide the fans and a/c equipment. However, a large amount of money will be spent on necessary up grades to out building and physical plant. We need a new S-ton a/c for the kitchen and pool wet room; new ceiling tile, hangers and insulation in the dining room; renovate the large men’s room and build storage for the club; renovate and tile the two pool restrooms. The cost of these improvements is about $22,000, which we do not have.

Neither the governing board nor the house committee wants to increase dues or assess our members for these needed improvements. Let us know if you have suggestions to fund these projects. Some ideas include a mandatory draw down ticket in the amount of $100 to each senior member, or perhaps a mandatory charge of-$100 dollars to each senior member who would receive a chit for $125 worth of food and I or drinks. What do you think of these proposals?

The kitchen committee will have a fundraiser Saturday, August 7th. The menu will include baked chicken and dirty rice. Les Lala is donating some ducks for a duck and sausage gumbo. Jack Humphries gave us about 200 dove breast which will be prepared several different ways be some of our best gourmet chefs. The price will be $10.00 per person.

An additional Lobster fest will be Saturday, August 21st at the club. Two servings are available at 6pm and 8pm. If not enough people sign up for this event we will have one seating at 7pm. You will be notified which option will be chosen.

Sailing Program Fund Raiser

We will be holding a fundraiser to help build our Sailing Program. The object is to get the kids sailing, our parents involved with the club and our club back active in the sailing world. In the next few weeks you will received 20 tickets, each ticket is a$ 1.00 donation and enters you for a chance to win $250.00. You will be able to charge this to your account, write a check or send in cash. Enter as many times as you wish, extra tickets will be available at the bar. We need every member’s involvement and help with this fundraiser in order to make it a success. Thank you in advance for your support!

Junior Members

We are trying to get Juniors more involved in activities at the club. The problem is that I am not aware of all the Juniors and how to contact them--other than those that sail on Fridays at 5:30pm.(anyone is welcome sailor or not) We grill burgers and hot dogs after racing. Then watch the wonderful fireworks! But I do need to know if you plan to come and I may ask for your help! We also had a great time at the Luau recently planned by the entertainment committee poolside! So, if you have a Junior that is interested in doing fun things at the club, call me Donna O'Rourke at 388-1844 or leave me the Junior name, age, and phone number at the club and I will call you!

Last but not least, if you have any ideas for activities, call me!

ATTENTION JUNIOR MEMBERS

We will be electing new Junior Officers July 7th at 6pm ..If interested apply by July 2nd at the Club for the position you are seeking.

Destroying Plants

NOTICE: We are very disappointed that some of our children have been seen destroying plants at the club. We are not talking about a small child who would just like to pick a pretty flower. That is natural and expected. We are talking about a much larger child who should know better. We would like to ask our parents to talk to their children about respecting property and stress that it took a lot of hard work to get the grounds looking as good as they do.

The Green Column

As we are well into the summer, prime planting time is behind us. We did put in thirty hostas on the west side of the parking lot in June and some shrubs behind the flag pole. Ask Jennifer and Jude how they like to sweat with the geriatrics. Thanks for the help.

It’s beginning to look very tropical around the pool and I hope everyone is enjoying the flowers. For the rest of the hot weather it will be weed, feed and water.
