| Commodores Corner Everything is moving along fine at the club. Mitch Parker, our Pier Committee Chairman and his team worked all weekend decking the pier from Highway 90 to the waters edge, fixed all the broken water lines, and started securing power back to the slips. Thanks Mitch, you and your team are doing a great job. House Committee chairman Gavin Schmidt is getting the ball rolling on securing our new roof which was damaged from Hurricane Georges. Our Kitchen Committee Chairman Stag Pitalo and Maintenance Committee T-boy, Dave Cole and Tom Capers were busy all weekend. The had to prep the kitchen for the clubs new stove, po-boy press, and fryer table. Thanks guys you are doing a grand job. You all don't forget about the BYC draw down on Saturday, March 27th. Tickets are on sale now at the BYC office. Come on down and show your support for the Club. All proceeds from the draw down will go to help pay for all uninsured damages that happened during Hurricane Georges. Commodore, Mark Ederer |
Burning of the Ship
Island Lighthouse - 1972 Eye Witness Account by BYC Historian Joyce Wiltz One summer day in 1972 we set our from Broadwater Marina aboard the charter boat "BECUNA" headed for Chandelier Island on a fishing trip. In the afternoon the seas became so rough with winds out of the Southwest that we were forced to return to the Ship Island dock to remain overnight and continue the next day. As darkness approached and we were about to have dinner on the boat, we noticed what seemed to be a light in the distance across the water beneath the old abandoned lighthouse. While observing the light, it quickly turned into flames fanned by the wild Southwest wind blowing at the time. By the time someone on the boat went ashore to investigate what was happening, flames were shooting into the air, and the lower timbers were ablaze. Whoever went ashore on the pier to the Fort were met by two boys who said they were camping out overnight by the lighthouse and had built a fire to cook their food. They had gone to the island on one of the excursion boat and were to return to Gulfport the next day. They were really scared. Meanwhile the fire spread so quickly, it was impossible to stop it. As it continued to climb into the air and burn - timber after timber - it was an amazing sight to see. It continued to burn all the way to the top, finally collapsing after the huge timbers dropped into the sand. Believe me, it was a boat trip I shall never forget. I was very happy to learn that this landmark is being rebuilt as a Tricentennial project. |
