From the Commodore

First to Joan Ferguson and family-BYC's sympathy goes out to you. I was honored to be present at your memorial reception for Chuck.

We are fifteen days into our 2005-year, and I think with the cooperation of the Manager, Governing Board and membership, we have made some progress already, but have a long way to go.

I attended the GYA mid-winter business meeting in Pascagoula on January 8th and 9th. We got the Jerry Ellis Junior Regatta and the Biloxi Invitational on
the GYA schedule. We are trying to promote sailing, and start the Biloxi Invitational I also spoke with Mayor Holloway, who expressed interest in starting the annual Mayor’s Race again. He and I have work to do on this, and Ii will keep you posted.

At the same meeting, I attended the Club Managers meeting along with Phil and Brenda. I learned a lot about what other clubs are doing, and appreciated the information shared.

Richard Desporte, Jude McDonnell, Ann (from the office) and I met to set up a budget for the 2005 year, We used the 2003 and 2004 financials as a guideline.
The Governing Board approved it without a change. At our first meeting the Board was very cooperative, and I appreciate their efforts.

I want all of you to know the Club is financially sound. We do have a delinquency problem; however, the Governing Board will be addressing that soon.

We are a team, and I hope we can continue to work together to do better things for BYC. Finally, members, I want to thank all of you for the cooperation you we given me thus far. Remember, this is your Club, I will do my share, will
you do yours?

Sincerely Yours,

Jerry J. Ellis,
Commodore

Notice

Members of the BYC:

The Club has been dealing with an ongoing problem the Governing Board would like your help with.

Per the BYC Constitution, Section 12, bills are due and payable when issued. If the bill is not paid by the 28th of the month the bills are issued, the member is considered delinquent and loses all Club privileges. If the bill is still not paid by the 10th of the next month, membership may be terminated.

We know you all are, or have been, successful business people, and realize the importance of cash flow. In an effort to help with this issue, we are asking members to please pay their bill by the 20th of the month. Any amounts past due after the 28th will have a 10% penalty charge and a $25.00 office fee added. This will go into effect March 1st. Once accounts are considered past due, the amount due must be paid in full to restore Club privileges.

The majority of our membership pays their bills promptly, and will not be affected by this change. We ask for the cooperation of everyone to keep the Club running smoothly.

On behalf of the Governing Board,
Richard Desporte, Treasurer

The Green Column

Although January started out pretty warm it was only a teaser. Don’t be fooled into thinking spring is near. The latter part of January and early February is really our winter time on the coast. Many of our plants suffered from the cold in December and again in January. Don’t be tempted to cut back the frozen vegetation yet. I know it looks awful but the dead tops offer some protection to the root system against further freezes.

If you get a few warm days and just have to get in the garden start your soil preparation for spring planting. Rake leaves; remove weeds; add more compost and fresh soil and clean your garden tools.

Spring flowers will have to wait a bit but it’s not too late to plant most landscape shrubs. Valentine Day is my reminder to prune roses and crepe myrtles.
The Grounds Committee will be having a fund raising event in late spring or early summer. We’ll give you more information on that later.
In the meanwhile I’m still officially in hibernation.

Your Gardening Guru
Thelma C. Ellis
