SHALL NEW ORLEANS HAVE A REGATTA ?
We see there is to be a Regatta at Biloxi
next Thursday (September 13, 1849) and that 3 prizes are on that occasion to be
run for.
The Biloxi Regatta Club have, however,
thought fit to exclude from the race all boats which have taken more than 2
first prizes during the season. This rule, of course, excludes all the best
boats on the Lake.
It is, therefore, proposed that Dan Hickok
of the Washington House (at Lake Pontchartrain) give a regatta on the same day
that the Biloxi race takes place. By this means the people of the city may get
up a better Regatta that the Biloxi one.
The Undine, the Hiern, the Forsyth,
and the Picayune, shut out as they are form the Biloxi race, may come
over and take part in the Hickok Regatta.
The Biloxi Club, we think, acting
injudiciously. The object of such a Club is to improve the speed of boats; but
how can this be done if all the best boats are prevented from taking part in the
races ?
