BILOXI REGATTA

BILOXI, August 8, 1849

Eds. Crescent --

I have barely time to write you the result of the two races by sail boats, without giving particulars.

There were two prizes run for and the following arrangements were made for the races. The starting point was from the pier-head in the bay. A flag boat was placed at about South East five miles off, and another five miles from the first at about West-South-West. The distance to be passed over was about 15 miles.

The boats entered for the second prize started at 35 minutes past 12 o'clock, and it was agreed that those for the first prize should not start until 15 minutes after the first of those for the second had passed the first stake-boat.

All the boats for the second prize got a fair start, but the Eliza Riddle "Stingaree's", which started for the first prize was run a foul of by the Titus, and was in consequence delayed for several minutes.

The boats for the second prize came in the following order, the Mary Bella arriving at 4 minutes and 15 seconds past 3 o'clock:

    1. Mary Bella, owned by H.T. Sherman of New Orleans,
    2. R. . . .
    3. Harry Hill, Pass  Christian
    4. Creole
    5. Mary Barker, Biloxi
Not Placed - Laura and Grey Eagle.

The boats for the first prize came in as follows, the Undine arrived at 36 minutes and 35 seconds past 3 o'clock:

    1. Undine, of Mobile
    2. Mary Ana, do
    3. Flirt, of Biloxi
    4. Coralis, do.
    5. Pilgram, do.
    6. Eliza Riddle, of New Orleans
    7. Fashioon, do.
    8. Roberts Morris, do.
    9. Laura, of Pass Christian
    Not Placed -- Rigolette

The scene was fine; the wind was from the South West, but rather light. The steamers California and Gen. Taylor ran out into the bay with the spectators aboard. They had good music on the California.

There is to be a race for row-boats this evening, which excites much interest and promises a good deal of sport.
