REGATTA AT BILOXI
The "Seashore Sentinel," published at Biloxi, thus notices the
Regatta at that place, which comes off tomorrow (August 8, 1849):
We have had the pleasure of examining the beautiful prizes to be contended
for on Wednesday next, in the Regatta to come off at this place.
"They consist of, first, a magnificent Silver Pitcher, valued at $100,
for the first class sail boat;
second, a beautiful Silver Goblet, valued at $40, for second class sail boats;
and
third, a Silver Cup, valued at $20 for skiffs.
"The arrangements agreed upon by the Club are as follows: Two
stake-boats are to be stationed, one five miles south by east and the other five
miles south by west from the Pier opposite the Light House: the first class
boats are to start at 10 o'clock from the pier, sail around the first mentioned
stake-boat, thence due west to the second stake-boat, and thence back to the
pier.
"As soon as the first class boats reach the first stake-boat, then the
second boats are to start, and thus boat matches will be in operation at the
same time, presenting the most beautiful sight.
"The match for Skiffs, comes off at 4 o'clock, from the wharf opposite
the 'Biloxi House.' They are to row from the wharf to the pier and back again, a
distance of about two and a half miles. This match is free for all skiffs owned
at Biloxi or Back Bay."
